How do Russians and Arabs feel when they watch Hollywood movies where they are depicted as evil?
Lshtshfum Aschf?
All of those writings are hilarious and most of them make no sense. Those are multi-million dollar productions! What the flying flamingo? The producers just didn’t feel it was necessary to hire a person who would do a minimum research (ask a question on Quora, dammit!) to avoid being a laughing stock for about 200,000,000 people!
Murphy BarrettWhat I still cannot understand is, in Stranger Things, why were a bunch of Soviet infiltrators wearing Soviet uniforms and unable to speak English, let alone able to just randomly build a bunker complex in the US? Nico BurrisIt felt like a complete tone shift from the first season and it completely lost me there. The first season felt beautifully dark and fascinatingly terrifying to me, and the third was just… cartoonish in comparison.
Sergey BerezovikóvHe's already drunk. Dean CelikuAt the last episode of season 3 of Stranger Things there was a part where that weirdo guy with glasses was speaking Russian to a guard. If that guard had at least 2 working brain cells left, he would have immediately recognized from the accent that the guy was American. I mean, I'm not a native Russian speaker, yet I can recognize an American or French guy when they speak Russian. It's not that difficult. Sergey BerezovikóvThat weirdo with glasses is played by a Ukrainian actor and he speaks Russian with a slight but very well discernable Ukrainian accent, so that Russian guard would be more than suspicious. Vladimir Lebedev-SchmidthofThe guard replies with the same broken Russian as well so it’s not a problem.
Wes Frank“Like a bearded Russian with a Kalashnikov wearing an ushanka sitting on top of a nuclear reactor with a pet bear on a leash playing the balalaika” . . . Now I really wanna see this movie.“就像一个留着胡子的俄罗斯人,拿着一把卡拉什尼科夫冲锋枪,戴着一顶苏联帽,坐在核反应堆顶上,用皮带拴着一只宠物熊,弹奏着三弦琴……” William HoAs an Asian who can read Chinese, I SMH when I see people putting tattoos of Chinese words that are meaningless or were trolled by a nasty tatooist. So I get what you mean by this post.
Paul HoefferIt goes both ways. The English language t-shirts worn by people in mainland are quite hilarious. Some are dangerous. I remember one poor teenage girl in Beijing who was well endowed and her t-shirt read something highly inappropriate and would lead someone to think she was a loose woman. Andrew McKenzieDirector: We need this in RussianAssistant: But we don’t know any.Producer: Just type in some Russian letters. The funny-looking ones.
Abdelrahman DarwishAnd thank you for thinking this way! We have all around the world enjoyed Hollywood movies and I’m in no way against them or you as Americans. My answer was mostly as a joke and I hope you didn’t get offended :)谢谢你这么想!
Ibrahim G ZalloumMy dad got asked by an American what type of camel he rides. Sade HillBeing British and blood we can give you Arab chaps a break, we are of course the villain of choice for Hollywood now. Abdelrahman DarwishOf course! How could I forget about the British villains? But I must say, you guys are doing such an amazing job at that role ;) Alan Rickman in Die Hard is a classic! Sofia Abd Elghaffar, lives in Toronto, ONAs an Arab, I am tired of seeing my ethnicity constantly depicted in evil roles. It’s lazy writing and has been done too many times, and it’s hurtful. I’ve grown up with no Arab actors to look up to in Hollywood, and the few roles that do exist for Arabs are always as terrorists and villains. Are there actual Arabs that could fall under those labels? Yeah, of course. Just take a look at the long list of dictators in the Middle East. But to be reduced to some guy with an accent who’s angry at America time and time again is annoying and enforces stereotypes that we often hear from racists. I would rather not be represented than be represented as a stereotypical villain. That being said, if it is done carefully with proper character development and a backstory that isn’t just “grr I hate America” and in a way that treats our culture with respect and dignity, go for it. Just no more of that stupid writing.I know this doesn’t really answer the question but another thing that irks me is when Hollywood depicts the Middle East as some war torn country that is under developed and looks dirty. You guys realize there are actual cities with modern buildings, right? Dmitry Vakhtin, lives in RussiaHow do Russians and Arabs feel when they watch Hollywood movies where they are depicted as evil?I cannot reply for all Russians, but I don’t feel anything.Look, I grew up in the USSR with its “socialist realism” method, which basically meant that life should be shown as it ought to be, not as it was. (The adjective “socialist” was so powerful that it could arbitrarily alter the meaning of any noun).Hollywood has long assumed the role of spreading whatever progressive ideas are popular at the moment, which is OK beause it is just Hollywood, not a totalitarian state. I would never watch anything for being “progressive” (or “regressive” for that matter). I sometimes watch Hollywood moves because I like them. Any villain “Russians” that are shown there have the same relation with reality as blood-thirsty “capitalists” in Soviet movies. I am fine with that as long as I can switch the movie off and watch something else. Alan JohnsonEnglish guy here. The US generally use English actors to portray villains which I don’t mind too much. What I do mind is presentation of fiction as history to make the British and especially the English monstorous eg Brave heart, patriot or the rewriting of history so that notable historic achievements were performed by Americans when in fact they were performed by others. Stories are stories but when you start saying something is history it should be accurate. The stereotypical Arab villain has upset me despite not being arab or muslim when clearly intended as propoganda to justify and encourage the murder of unarmed civilians (Rules of Engagement). Generally however it is just part of the general fantasy world of films and we know that.At the end of the day stories are mosstly written for those with money… George Khayyat, studied at Alghassaniah Orthodox Private SchoolsArab hereIt's okJust don't believe them…BTW how could you believe these things, I my self have never seen a desert tent or the desert at all while I lived my entire life in an arab country and I've only seen the (only transportation method used by Arabs) Camel once in my life in a historical site…And just let me tell you something….Normal Arab folk don't have a gun nor a dagger on their waist and most of them sit on sofas and chairs or on a traditional arabic special ground set and that even includes tribes… no one sits on the bare ground till their ass splits in half…But returning to the point…I don't mind, because I know ,while you should mind that because you are given the wrong image…We are evil people crawling on the earth's crust and the righteous proud American hero has to beat us up… Yaroslav ShvidlerI don’t care.Besides no one ever asks how Germans feel, considering they’ve been primary foes for target practice in every major WW 2 game that ever existed. Sometimes I marvel at the sheer idiocy of the writing in some videogames concerning Russia and basically every country that is not US of A, but that’s about it.(身为俄国人)我不在乎这些形象。
